The lifetime-caps trap: gratuity's ₹20L and leave's ₹25L are LIFETIME limits across all employers. Changed 3 jobs and encashed leave twice? Those old exemptions already ate part of your cap — the final employer's payout gets only the remainder.

🧮 Quick maths: gratuity formula in 10 seconds
Covered employees: (15 × last drawn salary × years of service) ÷ 26. ₹80,000 salary × 20 years = (15 × 80,000 × 20) ÷ 26 ≈ ₹9,23,000 — fully exempt (within the ₹20L lifetime cap). Part-year over 6 months rounds UP a year. Private, non-covered employer? Different formula, same ₹20L cap. Compute yours before the farewell party — HR errors in gratuity are common and always worth catching.
