First Job Tax Guide: CTC vs In-Hand, 12BB, EPF + First ITR

₹8 LPA CTC ≈ ₹6.6L taxable, ₹0 tax in the new regime. CTC ≠ salary (employer PF + gratuity + insurance inflate it). Submit 12BB in month one, don't blindly buy 80C, file ITR-1 next July.

CTC decode (₹8,00,000 example)

Basic + DA₹3,20,000Yes
HRA + special allowance₹2,80,000Yes (HRA exempt only in old regime)
Employer PF (12%)₹38,400Exempt (within limits)
Gratuity + insurance + LTA₹45,000Mostly not in-hand cash
Gross salary → minus ₹75k std ded≈₹6,60,000Tax: ₹0 (under ₹12L rebate)

First-year checklist

  • Submit Form 12BB (rent/HRA, 80C) to payroll in month one — or face excess TDS.
  • Your EPF already counts toward 80C — don't buy random LIC/ELSS just for 80C before comparing regimes.
  • Collect Form 16 by 15 June → file ITR-1 next July (new regime is the default).
  • Switching jobs mid-year? Declare old salary + TDS to the new employer — or lose the basic exemption twice.

First-salary checklist (do this in week one)

  • 1. Submit Form 12BB to your employer — rent receipts, 80C declarations, LTA proofs. No 12BB = excess TDS = your money stuck till refund. This single form decides whether your monthly pay is right for 11 months.
  • 2. Pick a TDS regime (tentative is fine): most freshers should start with NEW for TDS — you can flip at ITR time with zero penalty. Don't agonise in April; compute in March.
  • 3. Activate UAN + add nominees: EPF money without a nominee is a paperwork nightmare for families. UAN activation + e-nomination takes 15 minutes on the EPFO portal.
  • 4. Start ONE SIP (even ₹1,000): not for returns — for the habit. The fresher who automates ₹1,000 in month one is the senior who never panics in March. Your future self will thank you.
