How to E-Verify ITR in 10 Minutes (30-Day Rule + All Methods)
Filing your return is only half the job. If you don't verify within 30 days, the ITR is treated as never filed — and Ritu's story below shows exactly how expensive that forgetfulness gets.
The 30-day rule (no extensions by default)
You must verify within 30 days of filing (uploading). Miss it and the return becomes invalid — as if you never filed. Consequences stack fast: belated-return fee, interest on unpaid tax, no loss carry-forward, and your refund (if any) never starts processing.
- Missed 30 days? File a condonation of delay request on the portal (Services → Condonation Request) with a genuine reason, then verify immediately. Approval is discretionary — don't rely on it.
- Paper backup: you can sign the ITR-V and post it to CPC Bengaluru — but it must reach within the same 30 days, so e-verify is safer and faster.
All 6 verification methods, ranked
| # | Method | Needs | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aadhaar OTP (recommended) | Aadhaar linked to PAN + mobile | 2 min |
| 2 | Netbanking EVC | Netbanking with linked PAN | 5 min |
| 3 | Bank account EVC | Pre-validated bank account | 5 min |
| 4 | Demat account EVC | Validated demat + mobile/email | 5 min |
| 5 | ATM EVC | Card + registered mobile (select banks) | 10 min |
| 6 | Digital Signature (DSC) | Registered DSC (mostly audit cases) | 10 min |
Aadhaar OTP in 6 steps
- 1. Portal → e-File → Income Tax Returns → e-Verify Return.
- 2. Select the pending return (AY + acknowledgement number).
- 3. Choose 'I would like to e-Verify using OTP on mobile number registered with Aadhaar'.
- 4. Tick consent, click Generate OTP.
- 5. Enter the 6-digit OTP within its validity window.
- 6. Success screen + confirmation on email/SMS — download the acknowledgement and keep it.
When OTPs fail (quick fixes)
- No OTP arriving: your mobile isn't linked to Aadhaar — update it at an Aadhaar centre first, then retry.
- Name mismatch error: PAN name and Aadhaar name must match (even spelling). Fix the mismatch, then verify — and note the ₹1,000 PAN-Aadhaar linking fee if still unlinked.
- Verified but refund stuck? Verification only starts processing — track the rest on the refund page.
