7 80C Mistakes That Silently Kill Your ₹1.5L Deduction
5-yr FD broken early? 80C reverses. NSC's last year? No deduction. Coaching fees? Never 80C. ULIP above ₹2.5L/yr? Maturity taxed. PPF above ₹1.5L (self+minor)? No interest. All 7 traps + fixes.
The 7 traps
| # | Mistake | What really happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Breaking the 5-yr tax-saver FD early | 80C reversed + interest fully taxable |
| 2 | Claiming NSC interest every year incl. last | Last-year interest has no reinvestment — taxable, no 80C |
| 3 | Coaching / hostel / donation as "tuition fees" | Only full-time tuition, 2 kids, India qualifies |
| 4 | Stamp duty 80C, then selling within 5 yrs | 80C on stamp duty reverses |
| 5 | ULIP premium >₹2.5L/yr (post-Feb-2021 policies) | Maturity taxable (10(10D) fails) — gains as capital gains |
| 6 | PPF self + minor above ₹1.5L combined | No interest on the excess; 80C capped anyway |
| 7 | Treating ELSS like a 1-yr investment | 3-yr lock-in per instalment — every SIP lot has its own clock |
Three more killers (#6, #7, #8)
- #6 — Breaking the 5-year tax-saver FD early: premature closure doesn't just lose interest — the deduction you claimed gets added BACK as income in the year of breakage. That 'emergency fund' in a tax-saver FD just became taxable income at the worst moment. Keep emergencies in liquid funds, never in lock-ins.
- #7 — NSC's final-year trap: NSC interest is deemed reinvested (80C-eligible) for years 1-4 — but the 5th year's interest is fully taxable with no 80C offset. Maturity year always carries a surprise tax bill; plan for it.
- #8 — ELSS folio-hopping: switching ELSS funds (even within the same AMC) = redemption + fresh purchase. Fresh purchase restarts the 3-year lock-in clock AND triggers capital-gains tax on the switch. Compare once, invest, and leave it alone.
Bonus mistake #9: counting the employer's EPF as your 80C — only YOUR contribution (12% of Basic+DA) qualifies; the employer's share never enters your 80C maths.
