Income proofs
Deduction proofs (old regime)
Missed document → real consequence (why this list matters)
| If you miss… | What actually happens |
|---|---|
| AIS/26AS mismatch (forgot an FD's interest) | Notice or auto-adjustment + interest |
| Rent receipts / landlord PAN | HRA claim questioned or disallowed |
| 80D premium proof (wrong email/UPI trail) | Deduction disallowed in scrutiny |
| Capital-gains statements (broker P&L) | Wrong ITR form → defective notice |
| Home-loan interest certificate | 24(b) claim without proof = risk |
Keep everything 6+ years. Assessments can revisit old years, and 'my old phone had the receipt' is not a defence. We keep a simple folder per financial year: ITR-V, AIS, Form 16, proofs. Ten minutes of filing per year beats ten days of panic during a notice.
One more: download your AIS in June AND again in March — late-reporting banks and brokers update entries through the year.
